OWL Speed Calculation Championship 2025
The fastest mental calculators in Ostwestfalen-Lippe (OWL) are world-class!
On Saturday, June 14, 2025, about 30 winners traveled with their families from across OWL to Bielefeld City Hall.
The award ceremony took place there.
In the Grand Council Hall, their achievements were celebrated.
There were nice prizes and many friendly conversations.
Short math games provided extra fun.
The event ended with a buffet.
The Andreas Mohn Foundation and the Ravensberger Erfinderwerkstatt organized the championship for the third time on World Mathematics Day.
The goal of the event is to make math exciting and interesting.
Math helps us understand the world, solve problems, and develop new technologies.
From March 12, students could practice online.
The competition took place on March 26.
It was in English, and participants could calculate for 24 hours.
Each round lasted 1 minute, and children and teenagers could play up to 20 rounds.
Participants came from 81 countries.
They had to solve as many problems correctly and quickly as possible.
Worldwide, 51,928,073 problems were solved.
Teachers reported that the students had a lot of fun.
The speed calculators from OWL are world-class.
They often took the top three places in Germany.
Worldwide, among 228,958 participants, they were always in the top 1,000.
Especially strong performers were:
Leonard Gisbrecht, Grade 2, Grundschule Milse – Rank 78
Lukas Biele, Grade 7, Kreisgymnasium Halle – Rank 86
The Wellensiek Elementary School in Bielefeld had the most participants: 75 children.
The school received a special prize.
The students showed that mental calculation is still important today, even with calculators and mobile phones.
The organizers are already planning the next OWL Speed Calculation Championship.
A big thank you goes to:
The parents who support their children
The teachers who make participation possible
The young calculation talents themselves
