In Germany, it is often difficult for refugees with disabilities or chronic illnesses to obtain assistive devices such as wheelchairs, walking aids, or hearing aids.
The laws usually only cover urgent medical care.
Since 2016, there has been an English- and German-language assistive device exchange for refugees with disabilities on Facebook and the website www.ability4refugees.de.
On these platforms, people who have assistive devices and those who need them can connect.
The platform has three main categories: Mobility, Communication, and Everyday Aids.
The human-rights organization Independent Living in Germany (ISL) e.V. and the Andreas Mohn Foundation aim to provide assistive devices for refugees through ability4refugees.
On the platform, people can list devices they no longer need.
One important rule: all assistive devices must be offered for free.
